MERRY CHRISTMAS N HAPPY NEW YEARS, HOW TO HELP YOUTH CORP. INTERNATIONAL IN 2011, HERE2BEABLESSING

YCI , SEASON OF GIVING HOW TO HELP?

Many  people have asked me both in-person, & amp; on-line, at various meetings around the country how they can contribute? Now this is an excellent question & now we have an excellent answer.
Many  people think  that donations are just monetary, actually its exempliary, we need  fellow education advocates to  volunteer time 1.THIS CAN BE THEIR TIME or even flight time(WE DO ACCEPT unused flight miles from various airlines, these flight miles can be used very efficiently covering other kids events across the country & around the world.

We can accept PINS from around  the State "POSITIVE STATE OF MIND " that is, pins from around the country, & pins  from around the world. AT one time Ihad in my possession 785,000 DIFFERENT PINS, I lost many during the Times of KATRINA and many of my cameras due to 911(911 Rescue Worker Poem " MEMORIAL DAY FROM A 911 RESCUE WORKER")on Poetry.com Some  of the many pins can actually be seen as it is documented in The most read Publication of Color around the world on the pages of EBONY MAGAZINE , OCTOBER 1996, at THE REOPENING OF CENTENNIAL PARK  it reads"Mark Perez TRADING OLYMPIC PINS".Same page as DEXTER KING, one of  THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEGENDARY LEADER DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING'S SONS & DAVID REID THE OLYMPIC USA BOXER. By the way should you have any additional copies of that OLYMPIC ISSUE with OPRAH, IMAN, PATTI LABELLE, ON THE FRONT COVER, UNUSED or used SPORTS EVENTS tickets, OLYMPIC TICKETS, SPECIAL EVENT TICKETS, GRAND-OPENING past, present,& future that would be an AWESOME BLESSING as well to contribute.

OUR UNIVERSAL GOAL is to have more positive PINS then anyone OR any YOUTH ORGANIZATION in  the world, while POSITIVELY representing THE USA especially in THE UPCOMING OLYMPICS YEAR OF 2012.

Soldier Receives Medal of Honor
by American Forces Press Service
President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor today to the first living servicemember to receive the distinction for service in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

During a White House ceremony, the commander in chief of what he called "the finest military that the world has ever known" awarded the medal to Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta for heroic action in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley on Oct. 25, 2007.

President Barack Obama presents the Medal of Honor to Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta in a White House ceremony November 16, 2010. Giunta was conducting a patrol as team leader with Battle Company, 2nd Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 503rd Infantry in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley when they were ambushed. He received the Medal of Honor for “conspicuous acts of gallantry and intrepidity,” according the citation. Giunta is the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. Photo by Mike Theiler."Since the end of the Vietnam War, the Medal of Honor has been awarded nine times for conspicuous gallantry in an ongoing or recent conflict. Sadly, our nation has been unable to present this decoration to the recipients themselves, because each gave his life, his last full measure of devotion, for his country," Obama said.

"Today, therefore, marks the first time in nearly 40 years that the recipient of the Medal of Honor for an ongoing conflict has been able to come to the White House and accept this recognition in person," the president said.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award a servicemember can receive for valor in action against a combatant force. Giunta's Medal of Honor is the eighth awarded to troops serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. The previous seven awards all have been posthumous.

"It is my privilege to present our nation's highest military decoration ... to a soldier as humble as he is heroic," the president said. "I'm going to go off script here for a second and just say, 'I really like this guy.'"

Cheers and applause followed.

"When you meet Sal and you meet his family," Obama continued, "you are just absolutely convinced that this is what America is all about. So this is a joyous occasion for me."

During Giunta's first of two tours in Afghanistan, his team leader gave him a piece of advice, Obama said: "You've just got to try to do everything you can when it's your time to do it."

The president then described the events that led to today's medal presentation.

President Barack Obama prays with Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta during a White House ceremony November 16, 2010. Photo by Mike Theiler."He was a specialist then, just 22 years old. Sal and his platoon were several days into a mission in the Korengal Valley, the most dangerous valley in northeast Afghanistan," Obama said.

Giunta was serving as a rifle team leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team's Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment. That October evening, his squad ran into an insurgent ambush.

The platoon's soldiers had spent the day in an overwatch position and were heading back to their base camp. Giunta's squad moved out first and came under enemy fire.

"It was an ambush so close that the cracks of the guns and the whiz of the bullets were simultaneous," the president said. "The Apache gunships overhead saw it all, but couldn't engage with the enemy so close to our soldiers."

When the ambush split Giunta's squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a squad mate back to cover. Later, while returning fire and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, Giunta saw two insurgents carrying away a wounded fellow soldier, Sgt. Joshua C. Brennan.

"Sal never broke stride," Obama said. "He leapt forward, he took aim, he killed one of the insurgents and wounded the other, who ran off. Sal found his friend alive, but badly wounded. He had saved him from the enemy. Now he had to try to save his life."

Giunta provided medical aid to his wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security. Brennan, 22, from McFarland, Wis., died the next day during surgery. A medic, Spc. Hugo V. Mendoza, 29, of Glendale, Ariz., also died.

"It had been as intense and violent a firefight as any soldier will experience," the president said. "By the time it was finished, every member of first platoon had shrapnel or a bullet hole in their gear. Five were wounded, and two gave their lives."

Obama said Giunta is a "low-key guy" who doesn't seek the limelight.

"Your actions disrupted a devastating ambush before it could claim more lives," the president said to Giunta. "Your courage prevented the capture of an American soldier and brought that soldier back to his family. You may believe you don't deserve this honor, but it was your fellow soldiers who recommended you for it."

Obama asked members of Giunta's team from that day who were present at the ceremony to stand and be recognized.

"Gentlemen, thank you for your service," Obama said. "We're all in your debt, and I'm proud to be your commander in chief."

America's highly trained and battle-hardened servicemembers all have one thing in common, Obama said: they volunteer.

"In an era when it's never been more tempting to chase personal ambition or narrow self-interest, they chose the opposite," he said. "For the better part of a decade, they have endured tour after tour in distant and difficult places. They have protected us from danger. They have given others the opportunity to earn a better and more secure life."

Obama quoted something Giunta said shortly after he learned he would receive the Medal of Honor.

Obama said, "Now, I’m going to go off-script here for a second and just say I really like this guy. (Laughter and applause.) I think anybody -- we all just get a sense of people and who they are, and when you meet Sal and you meet his family, you are just absolutely convinced that this is what America is all about. And it just makes you proud. And so this is a joyous occasion for me -- something that I have been looking forward to." Photo by Mike Theiler."'If I'm a hero,' Sal has said, 'Then every man who stands around me, every woman in the military, every person who defends this country is.' And he's right," the president said. "This medal today is a testament to his uncommon valor, but also to the parents and the community that raised him, the military that trained him, and all the men and women who served by his side."

Today's servicemembers represent a small fraction of the nation's population, Obama said.

"But they and the families who await their safe return carry far more than their fair share of our burden. They do it in hopes that our children and grandchildren won't have to," he said. "They are the very best part of us. ... They are why our banner still waves, our founding principles still shine. They are why our country, the United States of America, still stands as a force for good all over the world."

The president stood beside the staff sergeant as the Medal of Honor citation was read, and then fastened the distinctive blue ribbon suspending the medal around Giunta's neck.

Giunta stood at attention as the crowd applauded and cheered. Finally, when the clapping continued without abating, the young man smiled.

Giunta was born Jan. 21, 1985, in Clinton, Iowa, and grew up in Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha, Iowa. His parents, Steven and Rosemary Giunta, live in Hiawatha. He has a younger brother, Mario, and a younger sister, Katie.

Giunta enlisted in the Army in November 2003, and completed basic and infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. He married Jennifer Lynn Mueller, a native of Dubuque, Iowa, in October 2009.

Giunta completed two combat tours in Afghanistan with the 173rd, from March 2005 to March 2006 and from May 2007 to August 2008. He currently is stationed at the unit's home base near Vicenza, Italy, while the brigade is once more deployed to Afghanistan.

Giunta's wife, parents and siblings accompanied him to the White House for today's medal presentation.

Also attending today's ceremony were First Lady Michelle Obama, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, members of Congress, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, Army Secretary John M. McHugh and Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr.

Here is the text of Giunta's Medal of Honor citation:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded, in the name of Congress, the Medal of Honor to Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta, United States Army. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, on October 25, 2007.

While conducting a patrol as team leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, Specialist Giunta and his team were navigating through harsh terrain when they were ambushed by a well-armed and well-coordinated insurgent force. While under heavy enemy fire, Specialist Giunta immediately sprinted towards cover and engaged the enemy. Seeing that his squad leader had fallen and believing that he had been injured, Specialist Giunta exposed himself to withering enemy fire and raced towards his squad leader, helped him to cover, and administered medical aid. While administering first aid, enemy fire struck Specialist Giunta's body armor and his secondary weapon.

Without regard to the ongoing fire, Specialist Giunta engaged the enemy before prepping and throwing grenades, using the explosions for cover in order to conceal his position. Attempting to reach additional wounded fellow soldiers who were separated from the squad, Specialist Giunta and his team encountered a barrage of enemy fire that forced them to the ground. The team continued forward and upon reaching the wounded soldiers, Specialist Giunta realized that another soldier was still separated from the element.

Specialist Giunta then advanced forward on his own initiative. As he crested the top of a hill, he observed two insurgents carrying away an American soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other. Upon reaching the wounded soldier, he began to provide medical aid, as his squad caught up and provided security.

Specialist Giunta's unwavering courage, selflessness, and decisive leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from the enemy. Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta's extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, and the United States Army.

Roy Lewis: Man of the Year
By Clare Farnsworth

Posted 7 hours ago

aaAs good as Roy Lewis has been on the field this season, the third-year cornerback is being honored for his contributions off the field – and joining an impressive list of Seahawks who have won the award.

Steve Largent. Jim Zorn. Dave Brown. Eugene Robinson. Mike Tice. Jacob Green. Matt Hasselbeck. Mack Strong. Shaun Alexander. Marcus Trufant.

And now, Roy Lewis.

The third-year cornerback from the University of Washington has become a member of this illustrious group by being selected as the Seahawks’ Man of the Year for 2010. The award is presented annually to the player who goes above and beyond in his charitable and humanitarian work in the community. Lewis is now in the running for the national award, which is named after the late Walter Payton.

His selection caught Lewis by surprise. But then this entire season has been a series of surprises for him. From coach Pete Carroll’s declaration during training camp that the coaches needed to find a way to infuse his energy and skills into the defense, which they have done by featuring him as a slot cornerback in the dime and Bandit packages. To being voted the special teams captain by his teammates prior to the regular-season opener. To this latest honor, which Lewis found out about Monday afternoon when he was summoned to the hallway at Virginia Mason Athletic Center were photos of the past winners are on display.

“Man, this is a surprise,” Lewis said, smiling as he saw the spot where his picture will be added. “But then you guys have been surprising me all year long. It’s just been a year of surprises and this is a really cool deal.”

Lewis, who is in his second season with the Seahawks, emerged from a strong field that also included tight end John Carlson, defensive back Jordan Babineaux, running back Justin Forsett and past winner Trufant – who also are active in the community.

“Just knowing him, what he brings to this team, what he brings to the community, it’s just a positive vibe,” said Maurice Kelly, senior director of player development and a former safety for the Seahawks. “Roy is the most positive person I’ve met.

“He’s always happy. He always comes in and he’s even keeled, he’s positive. He’s everything that you would want in a Man of the Year.”

Lewis’ area of emphasis for his community involvement is children, and it’s in his genes. His mother, Kim Lewis, is an elementary school teacher in Southern California – where Lewis grew up, and grew into a standout athlete at Narbonne High School in Harbor City.

“I’ve just got a soft spot for kids,” Lewis said. “I do the things in the community because when I was younger I didn’t have the opportunity to experience it. There’s just something about kids – just the innocence of them. You can be so much of an influence to a young person, and you never know how much of an impact that can make on their lives and the decisions they make.

“So I appreciate the opportunity. I feel privileged when I go out there and talk to the young kids. I have the opportunity to give back, so why wouldn’t I give back?”

Lewis has been giving since his days at Washington. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi, the same fraternity that Kelly belonged to – as well as teammates Russell Okung, Ben Obomanu and Babineaux; not to mention Bill Cosby.

“Ever since then, I’ve just been on a roll,” Lewis said. “Giving back, some people go out there and some people don’t. For me, it’s just a way to feel like I’m having a positive impact and using the NFL as a vehicle to touch other people’s lives.”

In addition to having his picture added to the Man of the Year hallway, a $1,000 donation will be made in his name to the charity of his choice.

“Give it to the kids,” Lewis told the group that formed his welcoming community in the Man of the Year hallway. “It’s all about the kids.”

The pictures in that hallway comprise a Who’s Who of the best players, and people, in franchise history: Norm Evans (1976), Zorn (1980), Manu Tuiasosopo (1981), Brown (1982), Paul Johns (1983), Jeff West (1984), Tice (1985-87), Largent (1988), Norm Johnson (1989), Green (1990), Robinson (1991-93 and 1995), Brian Blades (1994), Todd Peterson (1996), Rick Tuten (1997), Sam Adams (1998), Jon Kitna (1999-2000), Brock Huard (2001), Trent Dilfer (2002), Hasselbeck (2003), Strong (2004), Alexander (2005), Trufant (2006), Bobby Engram (2007), Patrick Kerney (2008) and Josh Wilson (2009).

And now, the energetic, appreciative and giving Lewis.

“As some coaches say, I’m a the-glass-is-half-full type of guy,” he said. “I’ve always had a positive outlook on life, no matter what.

“There are never bad days, there are only bad moments. And that’s kind of how I live my life, with that approach. Every day is full of sunshine, even when it’s cloudy outside.”

It’s the positive outlook he shares with the students when visits schools on Tuesdays, the players’ “off” day.

“Absolutely, and that’s my whole intention,” Lewis said. “I want to shed some light on those young guys and young women and let them know there are people out there who care about them. And that I’m just as human as they are.”

Roberts, a celebrated former justice and chief administrative judge of State Supreme Court in the Bronx and a larger-than-life model for an irascible judge in Tom Wolfe’s 1987 best-seller, “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” died on Sunday. He was 88.

Judge Burton B. Roberts, shown in his chambers in 1979, died of respiratory failure on Sunday.

He died of respiratory failure at the Hebrew Home for the Aged in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, where he had lived for the past year, according to a niece, Amy Roberts.

In his courtroom, only Judge Roberts was allowed to be flamboyant. Voluble and blunt, with a fiery temper and a rumbling voice that brooked no nonsense, he drew far more attention — and publicity — than his black-robed colleagues, relentlessly chastising overzealous prosecutors and defense lawyers, and even chiding witnesses he deemed out of line.

Out of court, insulated by 14-year terms, multiparty endorsements and wide voter appeal, he denigrated capital punishment, mandatory sentencing laws, and public officials who criticized rulings in ways he felt were politically motivated intrusions upon the independence of the judiciary.

And he was not above calling the news media or summoning reporters into his chambers — as he had done when he was an assistant prosecutor in Manhattan and the district attorney in the Bronx earlier in his career — to make sure that the facts, and his point of view, were conveyed accurately to the public.

But to many colleagues, there was more to Judge Roberts than met the ear.

“Despite his image as a tough guy, he’s really compassionate,” Fernando Ferrer, the former Bronx borough president, said when Judge Roberts retired at the end of 1998 after 25 years as a State Supreme Court justice, the last 11 as the administrative judge in charge of criminal and civil trial courts in the Bronx.

And he was a hero to some he incarcerated.

“I came before Judge Roberts when I was 16,” said a man who served two years as a youthful offender in the 1980s, graduated from Pace University with honors, became a New York Mercantile Exchange analyst and never forgot a judge who turned his life around.

“He just seemed to care what happened to me,” said the man, who asked not to be identified. “It wasn’t the usual assembly-line type of approach to justice.”

After Judge Roberts retired from the bench, he joined the law firm of Fischbein Badillo Wagner Harding, working on civil and criminal cases. He was on the team that defended one of four officers acquitted in the killing of Amadou Diallo, the unarmed West African immigrant who died in a hail of 41 bullets in the Bronx in 1999.

Burton Bennett Roberts was born in New York on July 25, 1922. He earned a bachelor’s degree from New York University in 1943. He joined the Army in World War II and saw action as an infantryman in France and Italy, rescued comrades under fire, was wounded and won the Bronze Star for valor. He earned a law degree at N.Y.U. in 1949 and received a master’s in law from Cornell University in 1953.

He was an assistant prosecutor to the Manhattan district attorney, Frank S. Hogan, from 1949 to 1966, and was once knocked out by a defendant. The man, a robbery suspect who said he was being “framed,” lunged at Judge Roberts in court and punched him behind the left ear. Judge Roberts was unconscious for two minutes, and — although he volunteered — was not allowed to finish the case.

He was a take-no-prisoners prosecutor. Killers, drug dealers, racketeers, even corrupt politicians toppled under his verbal blows. His voice — described by a courthouse wag as a few decibels below the roar of a jet engine — could rise harshly, his face turning beet-red, as he railed before a jury about a defendant’s dastardly wrongdoing.

In 1966, he was recruited by the Bronx district attorney, Isidore Dollinger, to be his chief assistant, and when Mr. Dollinger resigned to run for a judgeship two years later, Judge Roberts became acting district attorney. In 1969, Judge Roberts, a Democrat, won a full four-year term with backing of the Democratic, Republican and Liberal Parties. He built his staff from to 100 prosecutors from 39.

In 1973, he was elected to the court, and over the next 14 years presided over hundreds of cases, including an arson trial and civil proceedings arising from the Happy Land Social Club fire that killed 87 people in 1990, the worst loss of life in a city fire since the Triangle Shirtwaist Company blaze in 1911. Judge Roberts sentenced the arsonist to 25 years to life, and helped negotiate a $15.8 million settlement of civil claims in 1995.

In “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” one of the only admirable figures is Myron Kovitsky, a Bronx judge who refuses to be influenced by the press, the public or publicity-seeking prosecutors. Mr. Wolfe modeled the character after Judge Roberts and dedicated the book to him and one of his former assistants, Edward W. Hayes. In the 1990 film version, the judge’s name was changed to Leonard White, and he was portrayed by Morgan Freeman.

Judge Roberts was a bachelor until 1982, when, at age 59, he married the former Gerhild Hammer. He is survived by his wife; a brother, Charles, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; a niece; and three nephews. Another brother, George, died in 2006.

In 1996, when Gov. George E. Pataki and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani criticized him for setting bail they considered too low for the accused killer of a police officer, Judge Roberts dismissed their remarks as “the bleatings of public officials who possibly are seeking political advantage.”

In his trademark stentorian rumble, he told a reporter for The New York Times: “The judiciary acts as a ballast on our ship of state, and it prevents the ship from being wrecked on the reefs of inappropriate judgment, and should not be steered by the whims of hysterical opinion.”

He paused to clear his throat.

YOUR KEYS TO SUCCESS

Many times the real "Key" to success comes from being in the right place at the right time ... and it can almost guarantee instant success for you. Knowing about something and being able to take advantage of it before everyone else knows about it is the other "Key" that puts you in a real position of power.

These 2 things combined can mean the difference between mediocre success and becoming an overnight success.

Well you're not only in the right place at the right time but you're also getting to discover something before everyone else does and it is ... Coming Soon!

This new company that you can get pre-registered for ... way before everybody else does ... is going to absolutely change the way the home-based industry, as well as the MLM industry, does marketing and recruiting "Online" and even more importantly "Offline."

The inside information I've been able to get on just one of their products first hand is worth its weight in gold.

As I understand it, one piece of the company that's being kept totally secret is their never-before-released "Rejection Free" recruiting methods and techniques plus their "Automatic Push-button Formula" that recruits like crazy and it's built right into the company's system!

It allows "ANYONE" online or offline the ability to recruit like crazy with the simple push of a button - no matter how green you are. As you'll see - It's a totally new and innovative way of recruiting and once you're exposed to it, you'll never want to go back to the old worn-out traditional ways of doing business again - Period!

It's such a different approach and is so appealing to the people who have never done anything like this before and even for the people who have ... that they just can't wait for you to share with them what you're actually doing.

Your distinct advantage right now is being in the right place at the right time.

Here is the link you need to get the "Key" to your success:

Your Success is just around the corner ...

Why sport is such a powerful unifier: Mandela, Shriver

Having been involved with Special Olympics Australia for almost three years now, it was sad to hear recently of the loss of the global movement's founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. There has been much said about the amazing things Eunice did during her life, both here in Australia and around the world, and it's a testament to the incredible legacy she has left for people with intellectual disability. Rather than focus on disability, it was Eunice's intention to show what amazing abilities these people have and, through sport, she was able to do so.

I've been fortunate enough to attend a Junior National Games here in Australia in 2008 and the excitement and anticipation that is built up around these events is amazing. Everyone comes together with the common purpose of achieving things others deem impossible and many of the stories created during such events are simply inspiring.

Sport has this amazing capacity to bring people together. While there are certain components within the 'sporting community' that we'd rather forget (a few exceptions to the norm), it is generally able to bring participants, supporters, coaches and volunteers together to share the best of human spirit - particularly in the case of Special Olympics. The difference that simply participating, let alone a gold medal, can make to people who are often marginalised in society is incredible and sport also acts as a form of rehabilitation in this sense, overcoming past challenges and building social support networks. In terms of community building, this is a key element of sport in Australia.

Eunice Shriver was a unique individual in terms of how she was determined to adjust global perspectives around intellectual disability, but there are other stories as well that are just as indicative of the power of sport in bringing people together. You may have heard of the instances during World War I when opposing armies lay down arms on Christmas Day for a game of football - such humanity in amidst the brutally.

Another example is the unification of South Africa around the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Nelson Mandela is no doubt an amazing individual, but his efforts to calm a warring nation through the symbol of the Springboks is remarkable. This documentary from the ESPY Awards is 'shivers-down-your-spine' stuff:

Edwin Hampton, band director at St. Aug's, dies at 81

by Lolis Eric Elie, The Times-Picayune
    Tuesday July 21, 2009, 10:43 PM

Edwin Hampton 'didn't just teach music. He taught manhood,' former St. Augustine drummer Bernard Johnson said
Legendary band director Edwin Hampton, a beloved community pillar, mentor to thousands of musicians and founder of the iconic St. Augustine High School Marching 100, died Monday night at home in his sleep. He was 81.
Mr. Hampton will forever be remembered for the look and sound of his Purple Knights, the purple-and-gold-clad band members who march each year in Carnival parades. But his contributions to his school and community extended far beyond parades and football halftime shows.
A gallery of photos of Edwin Hampton.
"He didn't just teach music. He taught manhood, " said Bernard Johnson, a professional musician and former St. Augustine drummer. "We practiced, I thought, harder than the football team.
"We would start Aug. 1, in the heat of New Orleans summer, and we would start at 7 in the morning and go on to the evening."
"He was preparing us for the future beyond St. Aug, " recalled Gregory Davis, one of the founding trumpet players with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. "That discipline, I know, I have carried with me throughout my lifetime."
YouTube videos of the St. Aug's Marching 100.
While his former students remember his impact on their lives, most New Orleanians remember Mr. Hampton's influence on their most cherished holiday: Carnival.
"He founded and led the quintessential New Orleans Mardi Gras marching band. They are just emblematic of all of Mardi Gras, " said Arthur Hardy, publisher of "Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide."
"They were the most imitated band in all of Mardi Gras."
    Searching for a style
St. Augustine was founded in 1951 as a Catholic high school for African-American males. Mr. Hampton took over the band in the school's second year.
He had a lofty vision of what a marching band could be. He honed that vision by studying college bands across the country.
At football games, most bands would march into a formation, then stand still while playing the music.
"He wasn't happy with that, " recalled Carl Blouin, a former student who served as assistant director from 1959 to 1992.
Blouin's first year as a teacher at St. Augustine was also the year the band revealed the fruit of its director's studies.
"Mr. Hampton had gone to workshops in the summer. He wanted to instill in us a different style of marching, " Blouin said.
The result was "patterns in motion, " an approach in which band members created complicated formations while marching a precise eight steps every 5 yards. Soon, Mr. Hampton's halftime shows rivaled the games themselves for entertainment value.
"I don't want to get in a fight with the football coach, but I do know a large number of people who go to our games come to hear the music and see the band, " Mr. Hampton said in a 1981 interview.
Such was the band's renown that, in 1967, St. Augustine's band desegregated Carnival, becoming the first black band to march down St. Charles Avenue in the Rex parade.
Though a great honor, marching in previously all-white Carnival celebrations was not without a price.
"Parades used to march through the French Quarter, " Blouin recalled. "That wasn't too pleasant because the people on the balconies would throw things on us and some of the things they threw, you don't drink those things. You know what I mean?"
    Band earns accolades
Under Mr. Hampton's direction, the St. Augustine band achieved national renown, performing for Pope John Paul II, eight U.S. presidents, several Super Bowl audiences, the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
The band was able to march through insults, vile projectiles and roses in part because of the St. Augustine mystique, an unwritten code of conduct and point of pride the band director helped instill in his young musicians.
"The first thing he did was appeal to our integrity, " said Terence Blanchard, the Grammy-winning trumpet player who played in the St. Augustine band in the late 1970s. "He constantly talked about having pride in what you did, having integrity in everything you did."
"Hamp taught us discipline, respect and leadership, " said D'Juan Hernandez, a local businessman who played trombone in the band in the 1980s.
"Those were critical value traits you had to have for him. All he asked of you was to be honest with him and to work hard."
If St. Augustine can be said to have a certain mystique, Mr. Hampton can be said to have exemplified it.
"He was like a legend, " said Michael White, a jazz clarinetist who played in St. Augustine's band from 1968 to 1972.
    Someone to look up to
For his students, Mr. Hampton embodied the same kind of authoritative cool they saw in the silver screen detective John Shaft.
"At the time when the Black Power Movement came up and people were looking at 'Shaft' and folks like that, Hamp was like a living legend, " White recalled. "He used to wear the leather jackets and drive gold cars."
This combination of street credibility and no-nonsense teaching defined Mr. Hampton's style.
"This majestic man walked in front of the band with this white beard, and I was just in awe, " said celebrated trumpeter Leroy Jones, who played in the band in the 1970s.
"Mr. Hamp was a disciplinarian, yet he was a gentle man, " Jones recalled. "He would quickly call you a clobber head if you did something you had no business doing."
While always aware of prevailing trends, Mr. Hampton managed to maintain his high musical standards in a changing musical world.
"At a time when bands were starting to play pop music to please the crowd, he played pop music too, but he also emphasized the difficult marches, " White said.
The band's signature tune was the Roland Seitz composition "March Grandioso." Other classic marches in the Marching 100 repertoire included "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite" and "Confidence, " White recalled.
"For a kid to play in a marching band and never play a John Phillips Sousa march is blasphemy, " Mr. Hampton said in a 2004 interview.
In addition to his work at St. Augustine, Mr. Hampton also played piano and saxophone, most notably in the Royal Dukes of Rhythm.
    'St. Augustine was his life'
Mr. Hampton was born in Jacksonville, Texas, in 1928. He came to New Orleans to attend Xavier University.
His only child, Tamara Hingle, remembered him as "a very humble man, a very loving and caring man."
Though he was a doting father, "St. Augustine was his life, " Hingle said.
"I talked to him when I took over the band, " said Virgil Tiller, who in 2006 became only the second band director in St. Augustine's history.
"He told me if I was serious about teaching kids music, there were some things I'd have to give up, " Tiller recalled. "It would take over my life."
Mr. Hampton's love for the school continued even after he retired, his daughter said.
"Living with him in the last five years was real rough, " Hingle said. "He was sick. He fought with Alzheimer's disease.
"He was still dedicated to St. Augustine. He was still just wanting to be of assistance to the band, to the school, up until the very day he died."
Mr. Hampton is survived by his daughter and her four children, Yakitha Hingle, Mikell Hingle, Malcolm Hingle and Anthony Hingle.
Funeral arrangements, which are being handled by Rhodes Funeral Home, are not complete.

To my mentor, my teacher, my molder. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to march for you. I reflect, and live by the principals you taught me even today as a successful business owner. You taught me how to prepare, how to practice, how to present, and most importantly how to project myself as a honorable respectful African American. We love you, thank you for dedicating your life to producing quality young men. We came to St Aug from all over the city and you loved us regardless of the wealth of our families, or the complexion of our skin. I am very proud to say that I was once a member of the St Aug Marching 100. Thank you

NOW YOU SEE WHY PINMAN RUNS BACKWARDS FOR VARIOUS CHARITABLE CAUSES TO HONOR THOSE FALLEN HEROES,at least 22 personally , including BROTHER WILLIAM CHAPMAN OF THE NY PORT AUTHORITY AND THE FIRE CHIEF OF THE NY FIREDOGS   to name 2, THATS RIGHT THE AUTHOR OF THE WELL KNOWN POPULAR  POEM  "'FALLEN BUT NOT FORGOTTEN"

That's quite interesting that neither THE WHITE HOUSE , OR THE CITY OF NEW YORK'S MAYOR was not notified of this PHOTO OOPS,HMMM , heads may not roll this time just yet it certainly turned more than REPUBLICAN HEADS .

    LEARN FASTER

AT some time in every student's education, he or she should memorize the meanings of LATIN and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes. After they are memorized, they will be like hooks that help the student catch and retain the meaning of words. The student's vocabulary will grow faster, and their listening and reading comprehension will be improved..

This is  easy to do using a low cost software program ,called LEARN-It The program CD comes with 16

Learn-Files with a total of 398 of these vocabulary building blocks .Its software that will turn your personal computer into a personal tutor(for this and other subjects). With enough repetitions, any student can burn them into their memory.

Each of these Learn-files has about 25 of these word parts. When using LEARN-IT, a prompt(root, prefix, or suffix) appears on the screen, the student tries to recallit, presses a key to see the correct definition and two or three sample words that use it.Then they enter a progress score of from 1to 5 (1=totalblank and 5 =instant recall). On successive repetitions, the student can focus their study time where it is needed(based on the scores entered in previous repetitions).

Should your team, company or organization be interested in obtaining this unique software teaching tool, please send us a note and we will make it available to you starting locally and continuing globally, school administrators receives a discount, and also  your school qualifies for a free site license, you can call or email us to set up an appointment for a  conference call   to assess your educational environment.

Wishing you GOD'S Best in all of your endeavors
